Procedure & Complication of Ganglion Impar Block, Mansfield TX

Ganglion impar is a sympathetic ganglion that is situated in the retroperitoneal space behind the rectum around the sacrococcygeal joint. A ganglion of impar block is safe and easy procedure used to treat visceral, pelvic, genital, perineal and anal pain.
This injection is a type of sympathetic block that can be used in the treatment of sympathetically-mediated pain, pain secondary to malignancy, neuropathic pain, and post-surgical pain.
The block of this ganglion can be performed with fluoroscopy, computerized tomography, or ultrasound guidance. our brain sends information to the body through pathways known as nerves. Nerves also receive information from the body and send it to the proper regions of the brain.
A ganglion is a place in the body where many nerves intersect. Nerves that communicate some types of pain from the lower pelvis and groin pass through the ganglion impar on their way to the brain.

Procedure for Ganglion Impar Block

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis in a procedure room equipped with a special x-ray called a fluoroscope. Your exact procedure may differ. But general steps for a ganglion impar block are the following: -
  • While lying on your stomach you will be connected to monitoring. The skin over your lower tailbone will be cleansed with an antiseptic soap.
  • Numbing medicine will be injected into your skin. This will cause a burning sensation for a few seconds.
  • During the procedure, your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen level will be closely watched. You may get extra oxygen by a mask or nasal tubing.
  • The healthcare provider will give you medicine to numb the skin around the injection area. It may burn and sting a little. But it should last only a few seconds.
  •  The provider will insert a needle into the area around your tailbone between your buttocks. Doctor will advance the needle until it is in the area of the ganglion impar.
  • Once it is correctly positioned a special dye may be injected to confirm the position of the needle. The anesthetic medication will then be injected.:
  • Numbing medicine may be needed to block pain. A steroid may be used to reduce inflammation. In some cases, the provider may use other medicines to temporarily damage the nerves. That stops them from sending pain signals.

Complications of Ganglion impar block

Ganglion impar block is a safe procedure. Some rare risks factors are: -
  • Bleeding

Bleeding will come in the injected area. Bleeding, also known as a hemorrhage, haemorrhage, or simply blood loss, is blood escaping from the circulatory system from damaged blood vessels
  • Allergic reaction

your immune system will defend against substances that typically don’t pose a threat to the human body. These substances are known as allergens, and when your body reacts to them, it causes an allergic reaction.
Allergic reaction occurs when cells in the immune system interpret a foreign substance or allergen as harmful. The immune system overreacts to these allergens and produces histamine.
  • Infection

Infection is the invasion and multiplication of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites that are not normally present within the body. An infection may cause no symptoms and be subclinical, or it may cause symptoms and be clinically apparent.
Infection may remain localized, or it may spread through the blood or lymphatic vessels to become systemic. Microorganisms that live naturally in the body are not considered infections. The immune system is an effective barrier against infectious agents. However, pathogens may sometimes overwhelm the immune system’s ability to fight them off. At this stage, an infection becomes harmful.
