Hip pain is the general term for pain felt in or around the hip joint. It isn’t always felt in the hip itself but may instead be felt in the groin or thigh. Hip pain at night can wake you up during the night or make it nearly impossible to fall asleep in the first place.
The pain can come from the position you sleep in, or it could be caused by something else. Hip pain is all too common, with everyone from recent college graduates to grandparents at risk.
The hip joint is where the ball of the thigh bone joins the pelvis at a socket called the acetabulum. There is cartilage covering both the bone of the femur and the acetabulum of the pelvis in the hip joint.

Inflamed tendons
Tendons are thick cords that join your muscles to your bones. When tendons become irritated or inflamed, the condition is called tendinitis. Tendinitis causes acute pain and tenderness, making it difficult to move the affected joint.

Arthritis

Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints. It can affect one joint or multiple joints. Arthritis is most commonly seen in adults over the age of 65, but it can also develop in children, teens, and younger adults.

Trochanteric bursitis

Trochanteric bursitis is inflammation of the bursa at the part of the hip called the greater trochanter. When this bursa becomes irritated or inflamed, it causes pain in the hip.

Hip fractures

A hip fracture is a serious injury, with complications that can be life-threatening. The risk of hip fracture rises with age. A hip fracture almost always requires surgical repair or replacement, followed by physical therapy. 

Snapping hip syndrome

Often your doctor can determine that you have a hip fracture based on your symptoms and the abnormal position of your hip and leg. Your care team will likely get you out of bed and moving on the first day after surgery. Physical therapy will initially focus on range-of-motion and strengthening exercises.

Osteonecrosis

Osteonecrosis can cause severe pain and disability, much like arthritis does. Early diagnosis and early treatment may improve the outcome. Osteonecrosis may result from use of glucocorticoid medicine or from drinking too much alcohol.

Symptoms of Hip Pain

The hip joint is where the pelvis and femur (or thigh bone) come together. It is a ball and socket type joint, designed to move in multiple directions. There are have some symptoms of hip pain. They are

· Stiffness
· Popping or Clicking
· Pain in the groin, on the side, or in the buttock region
· Pain with sitting or steps
